In 2013, Coram International conducted a mapping exercise to establish the success and impact of interventions aimed at preventing the death penalty being used against juvenile offenders under the age of 18 in four country offices in the MENA region – Iran, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Yemen. Using this information, Coram International developed a toolkit identifying advocacy approaches which UNICEF and others may use to engage is these issues, including preventing the imposition of the death penalty (from preventing prosecutors to charge juveniles with capital offences to ensuring that judges do not hand down capital punishment), finding alternative solutions to avoid capital sentencing, once a juvenile has been charged with a capital offence, and finding alternative solutions to avoid execution when an execution is to be carried out imminently.
